Introduction: Big Apple Blossoms – Spring in New York City

Mrs. ATXJetsetter and I are off this weekend to spend a week in New York City! Though we’ve taken many trips to New York over the past few years, It has been a long time since we visited during the spring. She had some meetings to attend so we decided to stretch out our visit to get some time to explore the city. We are also escaping the mass of people descending on Austin for South by Southwest.

Flights

Though I didn’t realize this until we had settled on dates, we were scheduled to travel along with half of the state of Texas as our trip coincided with Spring Break. Because of the demand, my roundtrip economy ticket on United cost over $700! I never thought I’d spend that much for the pleasure of flying four hours in the back of an Embraer 170.

On the return, we have a late night Thursday flight allowing us a full day to work from NYC. I’m interested to see as our flight approaches whether we’ll depart out of the new Terminal A at Newark or be stuck in the tired, old Terminal C.

Lodging

Since we are arriving at Newark Liberty around midnight on Saturday, we decided just to book a cheap hotel near the airport. I ended up booking us at the SpringHill Suites Newark Airport for $150/night. The hotel has a free shuttle to and from EWR and was a third of the price of the Marriott Newark Airport.

For the remainder of our stay, we booked the W Union Square. It is in a great location for us, close to many of our favorite places. The hotel is currently undergoing a massive renovation and, after staying at the Renaissance Chelsea during our last stay, I’m interested to see how the W stacks up.
