Delta Air Lines is preparing to expand in Austin once again, this time adding international flights from the Central Texas airport.

As most of you can probably tell by the name of this blog, Austin, Texas is my home which makes Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) my home airport. Delta has been expanding rapidly in the market and regional partner SkyWest has opened a crew base here to support many of the new routes.
The Atlanta based carrier is reportedly adding its first international service from the airport with a new route to Cancun International Airport in Mexico. This will join international routes from partner airlines including AeroMexico, KLM, and WestJet.
While information on the route is scarce at this time, it is expected to launch sometime next winter. This news was first reported by IshrionA on X.

Delta will launch a new route from Austin (AUS) to Cancun (CUN) next winter.
The airline will join American and Southwest on the AUS-CUN route. More details coming at a later time. pic.twitter.com/bfx95IOnEa
Cancun is a popular wintertime destination from Austin and Delta will be competing head to head against American and Southwest on the route. American has been retreating in Austin over the past few years and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pull out. Southwest appears to be digging in as of late, matching many of Delta’s new expansions which could lead to some great fares for travelers.

While little is known about the proposed route, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Cancun is an almost endless pit of demand in the wintertime from the United States. Delta operates winter seasonal service from Cancun to non-hub destinations like Cincinnati (CVG) and Raleigh/Durham (RDU).
Cincinnati is a former Delta hub and Raleigh/Durham is one of two Delta focus cities, the other being Austin. Therefore, it seems logical that they would want to connect the two during the winter. For now, we’ll have to wait on more information but this seems like a done deal.
Summary
Delta Air Lines is reportedly preparing to launch international flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The first international route is expected to be Cancun and will launch next winter. This is just the latest in a slew of new route announcements from the carrier at Austin in recent months.
