You Can Now Fly Direct Between Moscow and North Korea

While this flight likely isn’t on the radar for many readers of this blog, passengers can now fly directly between Moscow, Russia and Pyongyang, North Korea. This is the first time in decades that the two capitals have been connected by a direct flight.

Nordwind Airlines is Connecting Moscow and Pyongyang Once a Month

While Moscow and Pyongyang are now connected with regularly scheduled air service, flights for the time being are still limited. Nordwind Airlines, a Russian leisure carrier, is connecting Moscow Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport (SVO) with Pyongyang International Airport (FNJ) with 1x monthly service.

The flights are being operated by Boeing 777-200 aircraft and the inaugural flight is currently en-route to Pyongyang.

According to Reuters, tickets on the first flight began at 44,700 roubles, roughly $563, and quickly sold out. According to the Russian civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, flights will operate once a month in order to establish demand, but permission has been granted for up to 2x weekly flights in the future.

The 3,984 mile route between Moscow and Pyongyang becomes only the second route between North Korea and Russia, joining North Korean flag carrier Air Koryo’s flight between Pyongyang and Vladivostok International Airport (VVO) in Russia’s far east.

While I certainly won’t find myself on this flight anytime soon, for a variety of reasons, this has to be one of the most interesting routes we’ve seen launched in quite some time. Russia and North Korea are furthering ties in response to the former’s war in Ukraine and the fact that it is looking for allies wherever possible.

If there are any readers who have taken this flight or are planning to take this flight, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Summary

For the first time since the 1990s, the capitals of Russia and North Korea are connected via a direct air link. Nordwind Airlines has launched 1x monthly service between Moscow and Pyongyang with the option to increase service up to 2x weekly depending on demand.

  1. Translation:

It’s gonna be mostly nork soldiers flying west and body bags flying east. They’ll add flight if casualties mount.
