Southwest Gives College Football Fans More Options

Earlier today I wrote about Southwest’s extra flights for NFL games this fall. When reading the airline’s press release, I noticed that I missed their additions for select college football games which happened last month. In the spirit of “better late than never”, and because I’ve written about American and Delta’s new routes, here’s all the info you need to know.

Southwest Adds Flights for Six College Football Games

Flights are now available for booking at Southwest.com for marquee matchups in many Southwest markets. Three new routes not currently served are included specifically for college football games.

LSU vs. USC (Las Vegas, NV)

Southwest will operate additional frequencies from New Orleans (MSY) to Las Vegas (LAS) on August 29th and 30th in advance of the game on September 1st. Additional return frequencies will operate on September 2nd and 3rd. This route is currently operated by Southwest.

Texas vs. Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI)

Southwest has added a daily flight between Austin (AUS) and Detroit (DTW) on September 6th and 7th. Texas will take on Michigan on September 7th. The airline will operate two direct return flights on September 8th. This is a new route that is only in place for game weekend.

Alabama vs. Wisconsin (Madison, WI)

The airline will operate a single roundtrip flight between Birmingham (BHM) and Milwaukee (MKE) as the Crimson Tide take on the Badgers. The outbound flight will depart on September 13th before returning on September 15th.

Tennessee vs. Oklahoma (Norman, OK)

Volunteer fans can hop aboard additional frequencies between Nashville (BNA) and Oklahoma City (OKC) to watch Tennessee battle the Oklahoma Sooners. Extra frequencies will operate on September 20th and 22nd.

Ohio State vs. Oregon (Eugene, OR)

The Buckeyes head west to take on the Ducks in a key matchup in October. Southwest has added a new line to their route map with a single, roundtrip flight between Columbus (CMH) and Portland (PDX). The Outbound leaves Columbus on October 11th before returning on October 13th.

Georgia vs. Texas (Austin, TX)

Rounding out their 2024 college football schedule, Southwest has added additional frequencies between Atlanta (ATL) and Austin (AUS) on October 18th and 20th. The Longhorns and Bulldogs will be a much anticipated matchup though it isn’t the only big event in Austin that weekend. Formula 1 is also happening at Circuit of the Americas the same weekend, so expect plane tickets and hotels to be quite expensive.

Summary

While not as robust as American and Delta’s college football routes, Southwest is bringing the LUV to select games this season. The airline has added frequencies and routes for six marquee matchups that will help determine who’s hoisting the national championship trophy in January.
