Happy 53rd Birthday Southwest Airlines

It’s Southwest’s birthday and you’re invited! The Dallas based carrier is celebrating the airlines 53rd birthday by offering a sale on flights for, you guessed it, $53. Between now and June 20th, customers can book these special fares for continental U.S. travel between August 6 and December 18, 2024, and Hawaii, international, and San Juan, Puerto Rico travel between August 20 and November 20, 2024.

Southwest 53rd Birthday Flight Sale
Southwest is selling $53 flights for a limited time to celebrate its birthday.

Head on over to Southwest.com to book your special birthday flight. While not an exhaustive list, $53 one-way nonstop flights are available between:

  • Atlanta (ATL) and Tampa (TPA)
  • Austin (AUS) and Dallas Love Field (DAL)
  • Chicago Midway (MDW) and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP)
  • Las Vegas (LAS) and San Diego (SAN)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) and Phoenix (PHX)

The airline currently flies to 121 airports in 11 countries and, as a longtime Texas resident, I’ve had the opportunity to fly with them on multiple occasions. The airline famously doesn’t charge for checked bags, have change fees or assigned seating. Passengers, myself included, seem to have a love/hate relationship with the airline, either falling into the “never Southwest” or “only Southwest” categories.

I fall into the “sometimes Southwest” bucket as I wish they would assign seats and hate the cattle-call style boarding process. The airline has no seatback IFE and limited onboard power which makes for a less than stellar passenger experience. However, they do operate a ton of point-to-point routes from my home airport of Austin (AUS).

An activist investor has currently taken a large stake in the airline and is calling for changes so the next few months could be very interesting for the airline.
