Note: This Stay Occurred in May of 2021
We arrived on Saint Thomas in the morning after our United First Class flight from Newark and hopped in the car with Mrs. ATX Jetsetter’s parents to make our way over to the east side of the island and our home for the next few days, the Cowpet Bay West Condominiums.
Booking
For this trip, we decided to get a condo on the beach to allow us to have space for everyone and provide us with a home base. We scheduled this trip pretty last minute so properties were scarce but we managed to find a great location right on Cowpet Bay on the eastern side of the island through VRBO, and you can find the exact listing here. Our unit was right on the beach and overlooked the bay as well as Greater and Little St. James islands.
Location
Cowpet Bay West Condominiums are located on the eastern side of the island, near Red Hook in the Nazareth area. It is flanked by the Club Wyndham Elysian Beach Resort to the north and the St. Thomas Yacht Club to the south along Ridge Road.
Check-In
As with most VRBOs, check-in was done remotely and we were provided with a check-in time, door code and a list of instructions to access the property.
Parking
Each unit in the property had a reserved parking space. Ours was located just up the stairs from our door, which made it easy to load and unload our groceries and luggage.
Interior
Our condo was on the bottom floor of the two story building, down a staircase from the parking lot.
Once inside, the condo was essentially one large rectangle, with the bedrooms to the left, living room, kitchen and dining area to the right, and a hallway running down the middle. n The living room featured a pull out couch, chair, desk and a coffee table.
Between the living room and kitchen was a dining table with seating for six.
The kitchen was galley style but was open enough to the rest of the living space that it didn’t feel too separated.
The first bedroom was opposite the living room, which also had a view to the water. Apologies for the unmade bed, I took some of these photos as we were preparing to leave.
The bedroom had an attached bath and a separate room for the toilet which is nice.
The second bedroom was similar to the first, though it was located closer to the parking lot and didn’t have much of a view.
Finally, at the rear of the condo, there was a large balcony that had multiple seating areas including a 4 top dining table and a chair with an ottoman.
There was also another 2 person coffee table and a small loveseat in a space that could be accessed directly from the master bedroom.
From the balcony, we had a great view out over the beach and the bay and great sunrises as we were facing east.
Grounds
The beach is located directly behind our condo building though there was no access from the rear. To reach the beach you had to go out the front door and then walk between the two buildings to reach the water. The path was well marked and it wasn’t an issue for us but may be a problem for those who have limited mobility.
The beach was a small, half moon shape surrounding a small bay. There are some lounge chairs and shady palm trees close to the water which made it a pleasant place to relax.
For the nature lovers, there were a number of iguanas on the property and you’d frequently see them hanging out in bushes or digging in the sand.
In addition to the beach, the condos also featured a pool complex, though we didn’t ever use it. It also sits adjacent to the Club Wyndham resort which has a restaurant on site and can be used by guests staying at the condos.
Summary
The Cowpet Bay West Condominiums aren’t located near the hustle and bustle of Charlotte Amalie, but it is great if you’re looking for a nice, relaxing space on the east side. It had plenty of room for us to spread out and having a quiet beach right outside was also a plus. The only downside is you will absolutely need a car if you’re staying here as transportation options are limited and there isn’t much within walking distance.
