On July 14, 2024, a Philippine Airlines Express De Havilland Dash 8-400 overran the runway while attempting to land at Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) on Busuanga Island. The aircraft, operating as flight PR 2670, was arriving from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) with 53 passengers and 4 crew on board. The aircraft, RP-C5905, came to rest in a field off the end of the runway.

Weather in the area was poor at the time of the accident, with heavy rain reported nearby. A video taken by a passenger onboard the aircraft shows the plane touching down far past the runway threshold and carrying a high rate of speed after touchdown. The runway at the airport is quite short, measuring only 4,019 feet (1,225m).

It is unclear to me as to why the pilots didn’t attempt to go around given the runway length and the distance travelled prior to touchdown. Based on the video above the aircraft had no chance of getting stopped prior to the end of the runway.
No injuries were reported as a result of the accident and four inbound flights had to divert due to the closure of the airport.
At the time of this post, the aircraft is still on the ground in Busuanga and no timeline has been given for the plane’s removal.
