New Lufthansa Lounge Opens at Newark Airport (EWR)

Lufthansa Airlines has opened its newest Lufthansa Lounge in Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The new lounge is roughly 6,500 square feet and replaces the old Lufthansa Lounge at the airport which closed last year for renovations.

The new lounge has been designed with the German flag carrier’s Allegris concept and is the first lounge to open in the system with these updates. If you’ve been to Lufthansa Lounges before you’ll likely notice a difference in the decor and feel.

The airline spent roughly 10 million Euro on the renovation and build out of the new lounge which is broken into different areas with space for both business and leisure travelers.

The main focal point of the lounge is the Skyline Bar which features a large selection of cocktails, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. Local, craft beer from New Jersey is also available on draft.

On the food front, Lufthansa is promising customers a selection of fresh regional products that will be located in the bistro area. The summer menu at the time of opening includes cornbread from Jersey with candied tomato jam and sandwiches with trumpet mushrooms, bacon, crisp lettuce and tomato chutney on sourdough bread.

First Class passengers and HON Circle members have access to an à la carte menu which can be enjoyed in the private dining area. A selection of top wines and champagne are also available to these passngers.

Victoria Schuster, Vice President Product & Customer Experience at Lufthansa Airlines, had this to say about the new lounge:

“We are proud to be able to present our guests in Newark with a new lounge that sets new standards. It offers private travelers cozy retreats for relaxation and our business customers generous workspaces. This lounge is a testament to our commitment to the customer as we strive to continually improve the experience for our guests, on the ground and in the air.”

The new lounge is 25% larger than the old Lufthansa Lounge at the airport and features space for roughly 170 guests. One third of the space is dedicated to business travelers and features communal tables along with wireless charging and wireless printing. I can barely get the wireless printing to work at my house, so I’m interested to see how this works in practice.

The remaining two-thirds of the lounge offers a variety of seating for groups of all sizes. Multifunctional rooms feature space for meetings, phone calls, or children’s play areas.

The Lufthansa Lounge is open to First and Business Class passengers on all Lufthansa Group flights departing from Newark as well as HON Circle members and Lufthansa Senator elite members.

Star Alliance Gold members traveling on a same-day Star Alliance flight can also access the lounge in accordance with the lounge access policy.

Unlike the previous Lufthansa Lounge in Newark, this lounge does not appear to be open to Priority Pass cardholders. That may change as time goes on but should provide a much calmer experience for passengers flying with Lufthansa Group.

Summary

Lufthansa has just opened its newest lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport. It is the first lounge to open featuring elements of the carriers new Allegris product and appears to have a much warmer feel compared to existing Lufthansa Lounges.

The new lounge is in the same space as the prior Lufthansa Lounge but has been expanded, redesigned, and features a dedicated First Class space. While far from a flagship lounge, its nice enough for an outstation and excluding Priority Pass cardholders should help the lounge feel more private.
