Marriott is Bringing its Tribute Portfolio Brand to Manaus, Brazil

Marriott International, Inc. and the Fametro Group have announced a signed agreement to convert an iconic property in Manaus, Brazil to a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. The Tribute Portfolio is a collection brand within the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio known for providing hotels that are designed to reflect the character and community of their surrounding locations.

The yet to be named hotel will be the first Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Brazil and is expected to begin a phased reopening at the end of 2024. Once complete, the property will offer an array of amenities, such as a large wave pool, gym, spa, sports courts, meeting rooms and kids’ space during its initial phases.

Dining options on property will include various restaurants, including one with a stunning panoramic view of the Rio Negro. Additionally, guests of the hotel will have access to an orchidarium, a chapel, and pier for vessels navigating Amazon’s Rio Negro, all planned for future stages of development.

Michael Leon, Senior Director of Development for Marriott International in the Caribbean and Latin America, had this to say about the upcoming hotel:

“As the capital city of the Amazonas, Manaus serves as the gateway for local and international travelers to access the natural beauty of one of the world’s most spectacular biomes: the Amazon rainforest. The city attracts tourists from all over the world, and we are confident it will be a great success among our over 210 million Marriott Bonvoy members, and significantly contribute to the city’s tourism development.”

In alignment with the independent essence and authenticity of the Tribute Portfolio brand, the existing property will retain elements of its original architecture. Originally opened in March 1976, the iconic colonial-style hotel was renowned as a global destination, attracting prominent celebrities and influential figures of its time. The hotel is expected to reintroduce the timeless essence of the former property, Hotel Tropical’s heritage to the international tourism scene.

Grupo Fametro President, Wellington Lins, said this about the property and their decision to bring the hotel back to life:

“When we found out about the hotel auction, we thought we couldn’t let this jewel of Amazonian tourism go into the hands of people other than Amazonians.”

Once complete, the Manaus property will join the roughly 120 hotels spread across over 25 countries and territories that make up Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio. The hotel is not yet available for booking via Marriott’s website but, once complete, it will mark Marriott’s first property in Manaus, opening the Amazon Rainforest to Marriott Bonvoy members worldwide.

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the many places on my travel bucket list but I never gate traveling there much thought. With the opening of a new Marriott property in the center of the Amazon, I may have to rethink the rainforest’s place on my list.

Summary

Marriott International, in partnership with the Fametro Group, is planning to open Brazil’s first Tribute Portfolio hotel in Manaus, Amazonas. The property is slated for a phased opening in late 2024 marking a return to prominence for the historic hotel and opening Manaus up to Marriott Bonvoy members.
