Lufthansa 787 Gets 100th Anniversary Livery

The celebratory livery will appear on one of Lufthansa’s yet to be delivered Boeing 787-9s. The aircraft, registration D-ABPU, received the paint job at Boeing’s Charleston factory this week. Lufthansa is expected to take delivery of the aircraft, which is equipped with the airline’s new Allegris interior, in November 2025. Scheduled passenger service is expected to begin in December 2025.

The special livery has a blue fuselage with a white crane hovering above it, with the wings of the bird merging into the wings of the aircraft. The crane, which was designed as a trademark by graphic designer and architect Otto Firle in 1918, has become a unique identifier for the Lufthansa brand around the world.

The up close photos don’t do the livery justice but, in a video provided by the airline, you can clearly see the Lufthansa logo on the fuselage.

Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Airlines, said this about the new livery:

“Our Lufthansa crane stands for safety, pioneering spirit, premium quality, but also for freedom and reliability. This has been the case for the past 100 years and will continue to be so in the future. We are proud of our tradition and our values, and we look forward to continuing our great history. The special livery of the Boeing 787 honors our identity and also stands for a proud team of Lufthansa employees who give everything every day for the safety and well-being of our guests.”

Personally, I love the look of this new livery. It’s eye catching without being too over the top. Delta is celebrating its 100th anniversary of operations this year and, while the design has grown on me, Lufthansa’s is my new favorite 100th anniversary aircraft to date. What are your thoughts on Lufthansa’s commemorative livery?
