Is the Collapse of Silver Airways Imminent?

It appears that the end may be near for regional turboprop operator Silver Airways. The Florida based carrier filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in December 2024 and appears to be struggling mightily.

Silver Airways filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in December 2024.

The carrier announced its bankruptcy filing in an open letter to customers and stated that the filing will allow it to secure additional capital and undergo a financial restructuring that will strengthen its position as a competitive airline. The airline expected that the process would be completed in the first quarter of 2025, and have no impact on passengers. However, it seems like the opposite is happening.

According to Fox 35, the carrier abruptly cancelled all flights at Orlando International Airport (MCO) over the weekend, leaving passengers stranded. This was Silver’s third largest station. In a statement Greater Orlando Aviation Authority spokesperson Angela Starke stated:

“MCO received notification (Saturday) afternoon that, effective immediately, all departing and arriving flights with Silver Airlines are canceled.”

The airline also appears to have grounded over half of its fleet as aircraft are reportedly being repossessed. FlightAware shows only a couple of Silver Airways flights in the air and many flights have been cancelled throughout the weekend. The airline hasn’t posted on its social media channels since January of this year, frustrating passengers with the lack of information.

The few flights that are operating appear to be well behind schedule and, if you have plans to fly with the airline in the coming days and weeks I’d recommend identifying alternate travel options.

Summary

The end appears to be near for Silver Airways as the Florida based airline has abruptly cancelled service at Orlando International Airport and grounded most of its planes over the weekend. The carrier filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in December and stated that it would have no impact on operations though the opposite has been proven to be true.
