NOTE: This Trip Occurred in May of 2021
Since I’ve got a few weeks at home between our Nashville/Asheville trip and our trip to Baton Rouge in a couple of weeks, I’m spending the time going back through some previous travels that I wrote up on FlyerTalk and getting them updated and migrated over to this site. This trip was taken back in May of 2021, just as we started to see what felt like some return to normalcy for domestic air travel but you will notice a lot of masks and plexiglass that was prevalent at airports during that time.
We had spent the majority of the Winter 2020/2021 season up in Colorado skiing thanks to a Southwest promotional Companion Pass and wanted to go somewhere warmer as we ushered in Summer. Since many international destinations at the time still required lots of Covid testing and/or accompanying paperwork, we wanted to stay somewhere domestic. My in-laws found a great AirBNB in the U.S. Virgin Islands and I had some vacation time so our dates were set.
Booking Flights
In order to maximize our time on the island and minimize my time away from the office, we had to get creative. The earliest flight into St. Thomas was on United from Newark. There was no decent connection from Dallas on the same day so we had to stay overnight. In order to get from Dallas to New York, we used my Southwest Companion Pass to book DAL-LGA. From there, we would transfer to EWR for an overnight before catching a cheap EWR-STT First Class deal on United.
For the ride home, we managed to book a cheap STT-IAH-DFW ticket that happened to coincide with my in-laws’ STT-MIA-DFW flights.
Booking Lodging
With our flights set, I needed a hotel for our quick overnight stay in New York. The hotel that made the most sense was the Marriott Newark Airport as it was walking distance from the main terminal.
On St. Thomas, my in-laws booked us a large apartment on the east side of the island overlooking Cowpet Bay. The apartment was part of the Cowpet Bay complex which has since been rebranded the Club Wyndham Elysian Beach Resort.
