Icelandair, the flag carrier of Iceland, is launching flights between Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and Miami International Airport (MIA). The new route was initially reported by Aeroroutes and will operate 3x weekly. While new routes are always exciting, we’ll have to wait a while until these two cities are connected via air as Icelandair plans to launch the route on January 6, 2026.
While tickets have not gone on sale yet, the flight is expected to operate on the following schedule:
Reykjavik (KEF) to Miami (MIA)
FI691 Departs: 5:15p Arrives: 8:55p
Miami (MIA) to Reykjavik (KEF)
FI690 Departs: 5:15p Arrives: 12:55a (+1)
If this schedule holds, the flight will spend just over 20 hours on the ground in Miami. This isn’t great aircraft utilization by any means but will allow the flight to operate with the same crew in each direction. The flights are expected to operate westbound on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and eastbound on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Icelandair will use its new Airbus A321LR aircraft on the route which is the newest aircraft type in the Icelandair fleet. The carrier’s A321s are outfitted with 187 seats including 22 Saga Business Class seats and 165 Economy seats. The A321s are replacing Icelandair’s aging Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft.
Iceland has been a tourist hotspot in recent years which is driving a ton of demand to the country. Icelandair’s business model is also centered around connecting travelers between North America and Europe through its hub at Keflavík International Airport.
The flight timing may seem odd but it is meant to facilitate onward connections. The airline also operates a stopover program which could be a great way to see the country as part of a larger Transatlantic trip. I’ve yet to visit but it is certainly on my bucket list.
Summary
