Delta Flight to Amsterdam Encounters Severe Turbulence

On Wednesday July 30, 2025, Delta Flight 56, which was flying from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), encountered severe turbulence enroute which caused the flight to divert to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP).

The plane was flying over Wyoming when the incident occurred and, according to reports from passengers onboard, the turbulence came in three waves, each stronger than the last. Flight attendants and service items were tossed around, with some reports stating they hit the ceiling during the incident.

After arriving safely in Minneapolis medical crews met the flight, operated by an Airbus A330-900neo with the registration N422DZ, which had 275 passengers and 13 crewmembers onboard.

As of Thursday, July 31, 2025, all seven crewmembers transported to the hospital have been released along with all passengers who chose to share their status with the airline.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is a major hub for the Atlanta based carrier and members of its Care Team reached out to the affected passengers to assist with needs and coordinate onward travel plans.

Delta currently operates two daily flights between MSP and Amsterdam, one on an Airbus A350-900 and the other on an A330-300. Today the carrier will operate a third flight, also on an A330-300, which will transport passengers impacted by the diversion.

    1. Considering over half of the flight crew had to go to the hospital, and based on the location of the flight, I’m assuming that this happened during the meal service.
