Breeze Airways, the low-cost carrier launched by Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue, and Azul co-founder David Neeleman, is reportedly launching a few new routes with service to three new destinations for the airline. Some of these routes will take direct aim at service recently announced by Avelo Airlines.
According to Ishrion Aviation, Breeze is planning to launch flights from three new destinations:
- Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB)
- South Bend International Airport (SBN)
- Wilmington International Airport (ILM)
Breeze isn’t going in lightly here either, the airline is launching flights to multiple destinations from each of the three new destinations. from Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) Breeze is planning to launch flights to the following destinations:
- Bradley International Airport (BDL)
- Raleigh/Durham International Airport (RDU)
- Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD)
Passengers traveling from South Bend International Airport (SBN) will see two new routes:
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
North Carolina’s Wilmington International Airport sees the most routes for the carrier with four new destinations:
- Bradley International Airport (BDL)
- Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD)
Some of these New Routes Will Go Head to Head Against Avelo
Of the new routes that Breeze is expected to launch, four of them will go head to head against Avelo. The routes that will see competition are:
- Bradley International Airport (BDL) – Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB)
- Bradley International Airport (BDL) – Wilmington International Airport (ILM)
- Wilmington International Airport (ILM) – Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Wilmington International Airport (ILM) – Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
Three of these routes were part of Avelo’s recent announcement while the route between Wilmington and Orlando has been served by Avelo for two years.
While it is no surprise to see Breeze adding new routes, I’m surprised that the airline is going after ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Avelo with some of these additions. This is likely to lead to rock-bottom fares due to the competition on these routes with overlap, at least until one of them pulls out. The financials for Breeze must be looking pretty good if they’re willing to battle with another airline.
Summary
Breeze is reportedly planning to add routes from three new destinations. Four of these routes will compete directly with ULCC Avelo Airlines. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and whether both carriers stay in those markets long term or if one quickly pulls out.
