Ultra-low cost carrier (ULCC) Avelo Airlines is launching flights between Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). It’s been rumored that the airline was planning to launch service as they supposedly sent an RFP to the airport a few weeks ago. Now we have confirmation of the new route along with frequencies and flight times.
While the airline hasn’t made a formal announcement, an ad for the service is on the Airline’s website, the flights have been loaded into the schedule. The New Haven-New Orleans route is scheduled to launch on November 14th, operating 2x weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. The route will operate on the following schedule:
- XP 425 (HVN-MSY) Departs: 7:00a Arrives: 9:29a
- XP 426 (MSY-HVN) Arrives: 10:59a Arrives: 3:06p
Flights will operate using Boeing 737-800 aircraft and are currently available for booking at AveloAir.com.
I’m not surprised to see Avelo launch this route though I am surprised that they went in with just one route. New Orleans is a popular tourist destination and I assumed that we would see more than one route. New Orleans is also a focus city for Breeze Airways and the two carriers have started a turf war with new, overlapping routes.
It will be interesting to see if Breeze responds to the new route and/or if Avelo decides to add additional routes.
Summary
Avelo Airlines is launching flights between New Haven, CT and New Orleans, LA. This marks the ULCC’s first foray into Louisiana. Flights will operate 2x weekly on Thursdays and Sundays beginning November 14th. It will be interesting to see if the carrier adds any additional flights to compete more directly with Breeze at MSY.
