AmEx Centurion Lounge at SFO Closes, Will Temporarily Relocate

American Express has temporarily closed its Centurion Lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The lounge closed yesterday due to ongoing construction in Terminal 3, though good news is on the horizon!

American Express Closes Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3 at SFO

American Express closed the Terminal 3 Centurion Lounge as of May 27, 2025. While this is no doubt a disappointing development for travelers, construction projects at the airport made this a very difficult lounge to reach.

Prior to the construction the lounge was conveniently located for United Airlines passengers in Concourse F, directly across from gates F1 and F2.

With a terminal modernization project now underway, the lounge found itself cut off from a majority of the airport and it was extremely inconvenient unless you were departing from Concourse G, where most Star Alliance international flights depart. For example, this was the lounge entrance a few months ago when I visited.

One advantage of the construction was that it cut down on lounge crowding, though it achieved this by being a 15-20 minute walk to most gates. Now, the SFO Centurion Lounge has closed to allow for ongoing construction. It is expected to reopen in late 2027, though an exact timeline hasn’t been given.

The Centurion Lounge Will Relocate to a Temporary Space in Concourse D

With the closure of the Centurion Lounge in Concourse F, there is still good news for American Express cardholders. A temporary Centurion Lounge will be opening in Concourse D. According to AmEx, the Centurion Lounge will move to a temporary location near Gate D12 on June 15, 2025.

The temporary Centurion Lounge is located in the old Alaska Airlines Lounge, which was an American Airlines Admirals Club prior to that, so some of you may already be familiar with the space. At roughly 9,000 square feet it is 40% smaller than the previous lounge which was around 15,000 square feet.

A temporary Centurion Lounge will take over the old Alaska Lounge in Terminal 2, Concourse D.

I flew in and out of Concourse D on a recent trip and found it to be much quieter than many of the other terminals at the airport. Just based on my experience it seems to get the less premium United flights along with some transborder Air Canada flights. Southwest Airlines moved to Terminal 2 (Concourses C and D) earlier this year.

It’s currently unclear what the food and beverage offerings will be like in the new lounge as it does not have the same facilities as the recently closed Centurion Lounge. It’s worth noting that, through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, eligible Card Members can also access the following lounges at SFO: Delta Sky Club, Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, China Airlines Dynasty Lounge, Golden Gate Lounge and The Club SFO.

With the opening of the new space less than two weeks away, I’m sure we’ll have an update soon on what to expect inside. I’ve reached out to American Express for comment and will update this post if I hear anything.

Summary

American Express has closed the Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) due to ongoing construction projects. The Centurion Lounge will temporarily relocate to the old Alaska Lounge space in Terminal 2 during construction. The primary lounge in Terminal 3 is expected to reopen in late 2027 after construction has been completed.
