American Launches TSA PreCheck Touchless ID for AAdvantage Members

Starting today, May 29, 2025 traveling with American Airlines is getting even easier, especially if you’re an AAdvantage member traveling through select U.S. airports. American has teamed up with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to roll out TSA PreCheck Touchless ID for passengers at select airports.

American is Introducing Touchless ID for TSA PreCheck Passengers

The new Touchless ID program uses biometric facial recognition to match your live image to government-issued photos already on file (think your passport, Global Entry, or visa photo). No need to dig for your ID, just smile, scan, and breeze through.

Passengers can opt in directly through their AAdvantage profile on aa.com, and enrollment only needs to be renewed once per year. If you ever want to switch back to using your physical ID, you have the ability to opt-out anytime. As someone that travels with a small child, the idea of being able to leave my wallet in my pocket is a major selling point for me.

In order to take advantage of this new feature, passengers must be an American Airlines AAdvantage member over the age of 18, have a valid passport linked to their account, and have an active Known Traveler Number (KTN), also known as a TSA PreCheck ID number.

Initially, this program will be available for passengers at four airports:

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport(DCA)
  • LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is one of four cities where American is operating the program.

We’ve been hearing a lot from her recently, which I would say is a good thing, but this is what Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, had to say about this new initiative:

“We’re examining every aspect of the customer experience. TSA Precheck Touchless ID helps streamline our customers’ travel experience and makes travel with us even more enjoyable. We look forward to it becoming available to even more customers in the coming months.”

More airports, including more American Airlines hubs, are expected to be added to the program in the coming months.

Summary

American Airlines is introducing TSA PreCheck Touchless ID for its AAdvantage members traveling through Atlanta, New York-LGA, Salt Lake City, and Washington-National. While not a major improvement, it should be a slightly more convenient option for passengers that are willing to opt-in and I look forward to seeing this program expand.
