As American Airlines prepares to turn 100, the airline has just hit another major milestone. The Fort Worth based carrier has just taken delivery of its 1,000th mainline aircraft. This makes American the second U.S. carrier, after United, to reach the 1,000 aircraft mark.
American Airlines 1,000th Aircraft Revealed
With the airline making a push for more premium service offerings, it seems appropriate that American’s 1,000th mainline aircraft is a new, premium-heavy Boeing 787-9. This aircraft features the carriers new Flagship Suite Business Class product and will be deployed on a variety of premium routes including Chicago (ORD) to London Heathrow (LHR) and Philadelphia (PHL) to London.
The new plane was delivered to American on August 29, 2025 and carries the registration N849AN. This is the eighth premium heavy Boeing 787-9 American has received this year. The carrier has a total of 30 of these aircraft on order.
Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, said this about the milestone:
“We are excited to grow our fleet, adding even more aircraft that offer customers a premium travel experience. Looking forward to our next 100 years, we are focused on elevating and reimagining the onboard cabin experience along with every aspect of the customer travel journey.”
As American continues to take delivery of these aircraft, it will expand flying on routes such as Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) to Auckland, New Zealand (AKL); Brisbane, Australia (BNE); and Buenos Aires, Argentina (EZE) along with flights between Philadelphia and Zurich (ZRH).
Delta is the last of the big three U.S. carriers waiting to cross the 1,000 plane mark. The Atlanta based carrier has roughly 990 mainline jets in operation.
