American Airlines Forced to Cut Service due to Boeing 787 Delivery Delays

American Airlines made some tweaks to its summer schedule this week due to delivery delays related to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft it has on order. This comes a few months after the airline announced new routes to Europe and expanded service to Italy.

The Boeing 787 is the backbone of the American Airlines long haul fleet. The Fort Wort based carrier currently operates 59 787 aircraft, split between the 787-8 (of which it is the largest operator, and the 787-9.

American also has 30 more 787-9s on order which it plans to operate in a premium-heavy configuration. These 30 orders are delayed which is causing the airline some headaches leading into the busy summer travel season.

The always knowledgeable JonNYC obtained an internal American Airlines memo that outlined the changes in the carrier’s schedule for the summer. The most important item to note, is that the airline is not ceasing service to any destination as part of the changes, so passengers should have rebooking options available if their flights have been affected.

American has loaded the schedule changes into the system and four of the airline’s hubs have been impacted. From Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), passengers can expect the following:

  • Suspension of service to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) between June 5 and July 5.
  • Reduction of frequencies to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) in May.
  • Reduction of frequencies to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) from June to August.

From Miami International Airport (MIA), American will suspend its route to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) between May 6 and October 25.

From its hub at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, American is:

  • Suspending its route to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) between July 5 and August 5. This route will still be operated by American’s transatlantic joint venture partner Iberia.
  • Reducing frequencies to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) in May, though transatlantic joint venture partner British Airways offers plenty of flights on the route.

Finally, the airline is reducing frequencies between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) between June and August.

It’s worth noting that not all of these routes are operated by 787-9 aircraft but, rather the airline is deploying capacity where it is needed most to fill the gaps created by the delayed delivery of new aircraft.
