Allstate Sugar Bowl Postponed After New Orleans Attack

Fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs will have to wait another day to see their teams play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl as the game has been postponed following a deadly attack on Bourbon Street in the New Orleans French Quarter.

The attack happened early on New Year’s Day when a truck drove through a crowd of revelers near the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville Streets, one block north of Canal Street.

While New Orleans Police, the FBI, and other agencies work to determine the root cause, the Sugar Bowl Committee has postponed the game to Thursday January 2, 2025 at 7:45p local time. This event brings tens of thousands of people to the New Orleans area each year, Mrs. ATX and I visited last year for the game to watch the Texas Longhorns take on the Washington Huskies.

After the attack, there was some discussion as to whether the game would proceed as scheduled or if it would be postponed to a later date. While it initially appeared that the game would move forward as scheduled, it has now officially been postponed.

This will likely have a major impact on the travel plans for the tens of thousands of fans that have traveled to New Orleans for the game. While I haven’t seen any official announcements, I would assume that the airlines, hotels, and rental car companies will work with the affected individuals in the wake of this tragedy.

Tourism is a major economic driver for the area and the city is set to host Super Bowl in February. As someone who grew up in Louisiana and attended college just up the road in Baton Rouge, I have many fond memories in New Orleans and will no doubt return to the city soon. If I know one thing about the people of New Orleans, they won’t let this keep them down long and will come back stronger than ever.

Summary

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has been postponed after a deadly attack in New Orleans. The game will be moved to Thursday January 2, 20205 after a truck plowed through a crowd on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter in the early morning hours of New Years Day.
