Alaska and Hawaiian Are Co-Locating Operations at Multiple Airports

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are moving to co-locate their respective operations at multiple airports across the country. This comes after the two carriers merged last year, though they have retained separate branding.

Hawaiian Airlines Joins Alaska at LAX and JFK

As of April 22, 2025, Hawaiian Airlines has moved its operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to offer passengers easier access to check-in facilities, gates, and more across the combined airline.

At LAX, Hawaiian has moved its check-in operations to Terminal 6, the home of Alaska Airlines. All arrivals and departures, including widebody flights, will occur at Terminal 6.

In New York, Hawaiian moves into Terminal 8, the home of American Airlines and British Airways. This is being done in an effort to enhance connectivity with Alaska’s OneWorld partners. Alaska is currently operating from Terminal 7 at JFK but is expected to finalize its move to Terminal 8 by October of this year.

Shane Jones, Senior Vice President of Fleet, Revenue Products and Real Estate at Alaska Airlines, said this about the move:

“The new long-term lease at Terminal 8 and our resulting move strengthen our commitment to enhancing the guest experience, improving employee spaces and driving better economic outcomes for our JFK operation. Terminal 8 is home to American Airlines — our long-standing oneworld partner — and this move demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering seamless connectivity for our guests. After two years of thoughtful evaluation, we’re excited to be closer to American and other global partners to better serve guests.”

This is a great move for all four airlines involved as Terminal 8 has been underutilized in recent years as American attempted to shift much of its transatlantic flying to its Philadelphia hub. With the excess capacity, British Airways relocated from T7 and now Alaska will be making the move before year end.

First Class guests on Alaska and Hawaiian will enjoy access to the Admirals Club in Terminal 8 and Hawaiian Airlines passengers booked in First Class also have access to American’s Greenwich Flagship Lounge.

Other Airports See Co-Location Between the Two Carriers

In addition to Los Angeles and New York. Hawaiian has already relocated its operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). In San Francisco, Hawaiian has moved into the recently renovated Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

In addition to Los Angeles, New York-JFK, Phoenix, and San Francisco, Alaska and Hawaiian plan to co-locate in Sacramento, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas before the end of the year.

Summary

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are working to co-locate operations at multiple airports after their merger was finalized late last year. The airlines have already relocated at some airports with the remaining relocation efforts expected to be completed before year end.

  1. So for LAX, do we check in at Terminal 6 or TBIT? If it’s T6 and the widebody is leaving from TBIT, do we have to then walk all the way over there?
