Air Serbia is preparing to expand its long-haul route network with a new Transatlantic flight. This will be the Serbian flag carrier’s first long-haul route addition in quite some time.
Air Serbia is Launching Flights Between Belgrade and Toronto in May 2026
Beginning May 23, 2026, Air Serbia will launch 2x weekly flights between its hub at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The airline will use its flagship Airbus A330-200s, which feature 21 Business Class and 236 Economy seats, on the 4,610 mile route which will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Jiří Marek, CEO of Air Serbia, said this about the launch of Toronto service:
“After establishing direct flights to New York and Chicago, Toronto is Air Serbia’s third destination in North America. JAT operated its last flight to Toronto in May 1992. Now, after more than 30 years, we are proud to announce the reintroduction of a direct service between Belgrade and Toronto. This strategic step marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of our company and represents a continuation of Serbia’s economic, commercial, and cultural development. Toronto is known as one of the world’s most important destinations with a large Serbian diaspora, so the significance of this direct service goes beyond economic and commercial considerations. For years, the Serbian diaspora has been advocating for the establishment of a direct air link between Belgrade and Toronto, and I am extremely pleased that we have been able to align our strategic plans with the needs of the market. This route not only connects two countries but also two cultures and two communities, facilitating contacts and improving opportunities for faster and easier communication. I am particularly pleased that it will make it easier for many passengers from Serbia and the region to reach their families and friends. Establishing a strong presence in the North American market is accomplishing our vision for Belgrade to become a transit hub, linking Europe and North America. Toronto will be the third North American destination for the airline, joining Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Air Serbia will provide passengers with connections from Toronto, to numerous cities within its network, via its Belgrade hub.
Tickets for the route will go on sale as of Thursday, October 16, 2025 on the carrier’s website. At that point, we’ll know more about the timing of the flights.
My Thoughts
While I haven’t had the chance to fly with the carrier, I do appreciate the market share that Air Serbia has carved out for itself. Unlike many other government owned carriers, the airline has grown methodically and managed to turn a profit over the past few years.
This expansion into the Canadian market makes sense, especially given the geography of its existing routes. There is a large population of eastern Europeans in the Toronto area and the airline has great connectivity via Belgrade for a large portion of the area.
