Avelo Airlines took off for the first time today from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) with flights to Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). This marks the airline’s first service from Houston, where the carrier was founded and operates its national support center (I had no clue they were headquartered in Houston until I read the press release). This new service makes them the only airline flying nonstop from Houston to Connecticut.
Avelo’s New Houston Route
Avelo was founded in Houston in 2018 and made its public debut in April 2021 with a flight between Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and the Bay Area’s Sonoma County Airport (STS). Since then, the airline has expanded to serve over 50 destinations around the country.
Avelo founder and CEO Andrew Levy had this to say about the new route:
“Today marks a significant milestone as we inaugurate Avelo’s first flight from our home city of Houston. This route will also connect our airline’s national Support Center (headquarters) with the largest of our six bases. Avelo will be the only airline connecting Houston and Connecticut – which will make getting to the gateway to New England and New York easier, faster and more affordable than ever.”
Andrew Levy, Avelo CEO
The route is scheduled to operate twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays using Boeing 737 aircraft. Special one way fares commemorating the new flights start at $98 and can be booked at AveloAir.com.
Flights will operate on the following schedule:
Houston Hobby (HOU) – New Haven (HVN)
XP 399 Departs: 11:30a Arrives: 4:10p
New Haven (HVN) – Houston Hobby (HOU)
XP 400 Departs: 8:00a Arrives: 10:50a
Avelo has a strong presence on the east and west coast but very little in the middle of the country. It’s nice to see them beginning to connect travelers in the middle of the country with their route network.
While they will be the only airline connecting Houston and Connecticut, there is still plenty of competition between Houston and the Greater New York City area. Avelo has clearly found something in New Haven as the Houston route marks the 26th destination served from the Connecticut base.
Summary
Avelo Airlines began flying between Houston’s Hobby airport and New Haven, Connecticut today with 2x weekly flights. This connects the airline’s largest base with their corporate headquarters for the first time. It will be interesting to see what the loads look like on this flight and how this route performs long term.
