Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is being sued by JPMorgan Chase over an unpaid credit card bill.
JPMorgan Chase Sues Former Mayor for Unpaid Credit Card Bill
The former mayor, who left office in 2023 after failing to gain enough votes in the general election to advance to a runoff, is being sued by JPMorgan Chase bank due to an unpaid bill on her United MileagePlus credit card. Specifically, the former mayor owes the bank an outstanding balance of $11,078.01.
Lightfoot was served with the lawsuit at her home in October for allegedly failing to pay about $11,078 in bills, according to a copy of the complaint filed in Cook County Circuit Court. The suit declares that she did not object to the final statement from the bank in August 2024, before it declared the debt a charge-off. Lightfoot had been a Chase cardholder since 2005.

The former mayor has not made a statement regarding the case and her next court appearance is currently scheduled for December 2026. Hopefully she put those miles to good use while she could.
Personally, I’m shocked that the former mayor found herself in this predicament. According to the Chicago Tribune, Lightfoot reported $402,414 in adjusted gross income in 2021, the most recent year that the publication requested her returns. She reported taking out $210,000 in early distributions from retirement accounts that year to supplement her mayoral salary.
Before becoming mayor, Lightfoot worked as a partner at law firm Mayer Brown. She reported an average adjusted gross income of $971,626 from 2014 through 2017.
Summary
Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is being sued by JPMorgan Chase over an unpaid balance on her United MileagePlus card. Lightfoot owes the bank more than $11,000 in charges that she has failed to pay. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December 2026.
