The Oldest Hotel in Austin is Getting a Refresh

The oldest hotel in Austin, Texas is preparing for a complete renovation in preparation for its 140th anniversary. The Driskill Hotel, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, opened at the corner of 6th and Brazos Streets in Downtown Austin back in 1886, making it the oldest operating hotel in the city.

The Driskill Remodel Will Occur in Two Phases

The historic property is being remodeled in two phases, with the first phase set to debut this fall. This will include the reimagined Driskill Bar and Driskill Grill, along with a new bar concept that will be known as The Victorian. Both will be operated by Austin based MML Hospitality which is also responsible for well known Austin establishments like Ski Shores Cafe, Jeffrey’s, and Neighborhood Sushi.

The first phase of the project will also include the 110 guest rooms located in the tower portion of the hotel, originally built in 1929, along with a refreshed fitness center and 2,800 square foot ballroom on the Mezzanine Level.

For the second phase of the project, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026, the hotel’s lobby, grand staircase, and the 74 original guestrooms will be completely remodeled. The property is also adding a new retail space which will be named after the hotel’s general manager and founding family’s children, known as Stark & Sisters. All work is expected to be completed prior to the hotel’s 140th anniversary celebrations in December 2026.

SWOON, the Studio, is handling the design and branding of the remodel in partnership with Pixiu Investments, Woodbind Development, and Hyatt Hotels. Guests interested in staying at the property can book directly via the hotel’s website or on Hyatt.com.

My Thoughts

Living in Austin, I’ve never stayed at The Driskill but it’s a mainstay of the downtown area. I’m excited to see that the property is getting a full remodel in advance of its 140th anniversary and I look forward to checking out the property, even if it’s just for a drink, once work is complete. Given my experiences with other restaurants and bars operated by MML Hospitality, I have no doubt that the atmosphere will be fantastic.

Summary

The oldest hotel in Austin is undergoing a complete remodel in preparation for its 140th anniversary. All 175 guest rooms at The Driskill, along with common areas, restaurants, and bars, are included in the refresh. Work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026, in time for the hotel’s anniversary in December.
