Marriott Completes Acquisition of citizenM Hotels

Earlier this year I wrote about the fact that Marriott International was planning to acquire citizenM in an effort to grow its lifestyle and select-service offerings. That transaction has now closed, with the 37 property brand officially joining the Marriott family.

With the acquisition completed, the 37 property citizenM global portfolio has been added to Marriott’s global portfolio. This acquisition gives Marriott an additional 8,789 rooms across more than 20 cities in the United States, , Europe, and Asia Pacific. Two remaining citizenM properties are in the pipeline with more than 300 rooms expected to be added to Marriott’s portfolio.

Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International, said this about the acquisition of the citizenM brand:

“As travelers continue to seek innovative lodging offerings that blend technology with genuine, people-first hospitality, the citizenM brand is the perfect addition to our portfolio. Marriott has proven success in growing select-service lifestyle offerings, including our AC, Moxy, and Aloft brands, and we look forward to accelerating citizenM’s global reach with our guests and Marriott Bonvoy members around the world.”

With the acquisition complete, Marriott will begin to integrate the citizenM brand into its systems and platforms. Until that occurs citizenM properties will remain bookable on the brand’s digital channels.

Once the brand has been fully integrated, citizenM will become a fully participating brand within the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. Also, for the time being, members of the citizenM subscription program will continue to enjoy benefits. Additional details are forthcoming regarding how the program will work following integration.

My Thoughts

Personally I believe that Marriott and many of the other major hotel brands have too many properties under their umbrella. Obviously they are seeing something I’m not as the continue to add new brand across the globe.

While I’m not going out of my way to stay at any citizenM properties, at least I’ll be able to earn Bonvoy points there in the near future. I’m curious whether anyone here has stayed at a citizenM property. From a distance, citizenM seems similar to Marriott’s existing Moxy brand. However, I haven’t yet experienced any of its properties firsthand.

Summary

Marriott International has officially completed its acquisition of citizenM Hotels. Over the next few months, the company will work to fully integrate the citizenM brand with Marriott’s systems and Bonvoy loyalty program.
