Miami International Airport (MIA) is Expanding With a New Concourse

Miami International Airport (MIA) announced today that it has received approval for the construction of the all new Concourse K. This is the first terminal expansion since 2007 and is part of the airport’s $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action plan.

The new, six-gate, Concourse K is being built at a cost of $600.6 million and will also include a ground support equipment maintenance facility, enhanced baggage handling systems, and critical upgrades to airfield infrastructure. While it isn’t explicitly called out in the press release, One Mile at a Time is reporting that a VIP Lounge will also be part of the expansion.

This project is being done in an effort to meet the increasing demand for passenger traffic at the airport. Miami International Airport plans to accommodate 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040. In 2024 the airport saw nearly 56 million passengers and more than 3 million U.S. tons of freight pass through.

Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, said this about the new expansion project at the airport:

“MIA has not seen a terminal expansion since 2007, making this a truly transformative milestone for our airport.  The launch of Concourse K will not only increase capacity and create thousands of new jobs but also reinforce MIA’s role as a premier Global Gateway. With the unwavering support of the Board of County Commissioners and the dedication of Director Ralph Cutie, his team, and our airport partners, we are making visionary, future-ready investments that will build a stronger, more vibrant airport—one that uplifts our community, welcomes the world, and powers our economy into the future.”

A video released by the airport shows where the new concourse will be located, just past Concourse J, in the South Terminal. Currently, this terminal is utilized by Delta and non OneWorld international carriers so it’s likely we’ll see a variety of airlines use these new gates.

Construction is expected to begin after a ceremonial groundbreaking later this summer and the new concourse is expected to be completed by Spring 2029.

This isn’t the only expansion project happening at a major U.S. airport as Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is currently building the all new Terminal F, which will be used by American Airlines for international and domestic flights.

Summary

Miami International Airport is getting its first terminal expansion in roughly 20 years with the addition of the six gate Concourse K. The project is expected to officially break ground this summer with completion expected in Spring 2029.
