Qatar Airways announced today that it is set to re-launch daily flights to Canberra, the capital city of Australia, beginning in December 2025.
The daily flights to Canberra will operate via Melbourne to the airline’s hub at Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH). From Doha, passengers will be able to connect to more than 170 destinations across the Qatar Airways network.
The new flights will operate using Boeing 777 aircraft featuring the carrier’s QSuites Business Class and fast, free Starlink Wi-Fi. The flight marks the resumption of service that was eliminated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, had this to say about the carrier’s return to Canberra:
“We are delighted to be able to serve Canberra once again. The nation’s capital, the political heart of Australia, rightly expects to be served by a range of international airlines, and I am proud that we are able to play our part in that. Whether travelling for business, government services or leisure, our commitment to Australia, and to Canberra, is one that we know will bring much needed healthy competition to the market and greater choice for passengers.”
The resumption of service to Canberra is one of the first route announcements since Qatar Airways announced its tie up with Virgin Australia. The airline did this as a way to circumvent Australia’s limits on flights from foreign carriers to and from the country.
While I won’t be flying between Canberra and Doha often, I am always excited to see carriers resume service and return to normal after Covid-19. While the route doesn’t begin until December 2025, the route is currently on sale via qatarairways.com.
